2002 Chicago Cup Recurve Bow Olympic Round
The Olympic Round got underway immediately after the FITA round finished. The recurve side started at the 1/8 round and compound started at the 1/4 round. Everyone shot at their 2nd long distance, it did not take long for the Bowman and Cubs to realize they could compete with the "big guys". The squeals of excitement coming from the short end of the field was a joy to hear. It was neat to see the Juniors and Seniors walk over to see the targets of their "competition" at the end of each end. Lots of "Big Dogs" were knocked out by the "little guys". Top ranked Junior and Jr USAT member Corey McCormick was taken to the wood shed by Female Bowman Whay Cheng 102-103. Corey was left moaning "God I only needed one point" . Jr World team member Jon Miller was crushed 113-86 by the march to Gold of Bowman David Iozzo. Jon was last seen leaving the field in stony silence. Not to escape unscathed in spite of a very gallant effort, National Champion, Jr USAT team member and U.S.A. Number 1 ranked Junior Stephanie Miller fell 98 to 110 in the Gold Medal match to Bowman David Iozzo. I think I heard Steph say "that was not as bad as almost getting my clock cleaned by Whay Cheng in the 1/2 finals". So there you have it, this was one of the most exciting Olympic Rounds I have ever watched.

2002 Chicago Cup Compound Bow Olympic Round
On the compound side the archers were relieved to learn they did not have to shoot against any of those young hot shots (please stay away) . Other issues did exist however, Terry Brandenburg gave notice in the 1/4 round by posting a score of 166. Terry marched through Jerry Kuchenbrod and noted club champion Kathy Miller to meet veteran recurve archer Ron McCormick in the Gold Medal round. Ron had his work cut out for him early on in the form of Ed Price in the first round who fell to Rons 152 with a score of 142. Ron had to get around veteran competitor and NAA President Mark Miller in the 1/2 final. In a tight arrow for arrow battle ( dramatic Olympic type music comes in here) the two archers struggled into the last end.(the camera zooms in to catch the thooong of the arrows impacting the 6 and 7 rings) With one point separating them at the start of the last end Mark finally fell 98-100 saying "I got beat by a guy who did not shoot a compound bow all year!". Mark went on to win the Bronze Medal match with Kathy Miller 109-103. He was cautioned that the victory could effect the quality of his meals for a few weeks. Rons charge would take him to the Gold Medal Round and victory in a 104 - 105 battle with friend Terry Brandenburg, neither wanted to see the other go down in defeat (yea right).
e won cups in the FITA round to start their collection, how many cups will you get? Come join us. One idea we are playing with is having a team OR.| Terry Brandenburg | 166 | ||||||
